A moose is the largest member of the deer family (Cervidae), scientifically known as Alces alces. They are recognizable by their enormous size, long legs, and broad, flat antlers on males, which can span up to six feet across. Adult moose can stand around 5 to 7 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh anywhere from 800 to over 1,500 pounds, with males typically larger than females.
Moose are herbivores, feeding mainly on leaves, twigs, bark, and aquatic plants. Their long legs allow them to move easily through deep snow and swampy terrain, and they are strong swimmers, often feeding in lakes and rivers. They are generally solitary animals, except during mating season or when a cow (female) is raising a calf.
Moose live in the northern regions of North America, Europe, and Asia, thriving in boreal and mixed forests where food is abundant. Despite their massive size, they can be surprisingly agile and fast, capable of running up to 35 miles per hour and jumping over obstacles.
They are mostly gentle creatures but can be dangerous if provoked, especially during rutting season or if a mother feels her calf is threatened. Moose are iconic animals in many northern cultures and are often featured in folklore, hunting traditions, and wildlife observation.
