A Neapolitan Mastiff is a large, powerful dog breed originally from Italy, known for its massive size, loose, wrinkled skin, and protective nature. Historically, these dogs were used as guard dogs, bodyguards, and war dogs, dating back to ancient Roman times, where they descended from the Molossus dogs.

Physically, a Neapolitan Mastiff is striking and imposing. Adult males typically weigh between 150 to 200 pounds (68–90 kg) and can stand around 26–31 inches (66–79 cm) tall at the shoulder. Their most distinctive features are their heavy wrinkles and folds, especially around the face and neck, along with large jowls and a broad, square-shaped head. The skin’s loose nature gives them a unique, almost prehistoric appearance. Their coat is short, dense, and comes in colors such as gray, black, mahogany, or tawny, often with darker masks around the muzzle.

Temperament-wise, Neapolitan Mastiffs are known for being calm, loyal, and affectionate with their families, including children. They form strong bonds with their owners but are naturally suspicious of strangers, making them excellent watchdogs. Despite their intimidating size, they are usually gentle and even-tempered, though they require consistent socialization and training from an early age to manage their protective instincts.

Neapolitan Mastiffs are prone to certain health issues due to their size and skin folds, including hip dysplasia, heart problems, and skin infections if the wrinkles aren’t kept clean and dry. Their exercise needs are moderate; they enjoy short walks and playtime but aren’t overly energetic.
