A Newfoundland Dog, often called a “Newfie,” is a large working breed known for its strength, gentle temperament, and excellent swimming ability. Originating from Newfoundland, Canada, these dogs were historically used by fishermen to pull nets and haul carts, as well as to rescue people from the water. Their strong, muscular build and webbed feet make them natural swimmers, and they are famous for life-saving water rescues.
Newfoundlands have a thick, water-resistant double coat that protects them in cold water and harsh weather. Coat colors typically include black, brown, gray, or Landseer (white with black markings). Despite their imposing size—they can weigh between 100 to 150 pounds or more—they are famously gentle and patient, especially with children, earning them a reputation as “gentle giants.”
Intelligence and a calm demeanor make them good family pets, but they require space, regular exercise, and grooming to maintain their coat. They are also prone to certain health issues like hip dysplasia, heart problems, and obesity, so attentive care is important.
In addition to being companion animals, Newfoundlands are often trained for water rescue, therapy work, and other service tasks due to their strength, reliability, and empathetic nature. Their combination of power, loyalty, and a sweet, patient temperament makes them one of the most beloved large dog breeds worldwide.
