The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, often called a “Toller,” is a medium-sized sporting dog breed originating from Nova Scotia, Canada. It was specifically developed in the early 20th century to assist hunters in luring and retrieving waterfowl, especially ducks. The breed’s name comes from its unique hunting technique: “tolling” refers to the dog’s ability to play along shorelines, attracting curious ducks closer within shooting range, and then retrieving them after they are shot.
Tollers are known for their intelligence, energy, and playful nature. They have a distinctive appearance, with a dense, water-repellent double coat that is typically reddish-gold with white markings on the chest, feet, or tail tip. They are slightly smaller than other retrievers, standing about 17 to 21 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 35 and 50 pounds, giving them agility and stamina in the field. Their expressive eyes, often amber or brown, convey alertness and curiosity.
Beyond hunting, Tollers excel in a variety of dog sports, including agility, obedience, dock diving, and search-and-rescue work, thanks to their keen intelligence and strong work ethic. They are highly trainable but require consistent mental and physical stimulation to prevent boredom, which can lead to destructive behavior.
As family pets, Tollers are affectionate, loyal, and sociable, often forming strong bonds with their human families. They get along well with children and other dogs but retain a natural prey drive, so supervision around smaller animals is recommended. Their high energy levels make them better suited to active households or owners who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, running, or water sports.
In short, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a versatile, intelligent, and energetic dog, prized both for its hunting prowess and its engaging, friendly personality. They thrive in environments where they are mentally challenged and physically active.
