An otter is a semiaquatic mammal belonging to the family Mustelidae, the same group that includes weasels, badgers, and ferrets. There are 13 species of otters found around the world, living in rivers, lakes, coastal areas, and even open oceans. They are known for their playful behavior, streamlined bodies, and excellent swimming abilities.

Otters have long, flexible bodies with short legs, webbed feet, and strong tails that help them move efficiently through water. Their dense, waterproof fur provides insulation and keeps them warm, even in cold environments. They are carnivorous, feeding mainly on fish, crustaceans, and small aquatic animals. Sea otters, in particular, are famous for using rocks to crack open shellfish, one of the few examples of tool use among non-human animals.

They are highly social animals, often seen playing, sliding, or floating together. River otters are more commonly found in freshwater habitats across North America, Europe, and Asia, while sea otters live along the coasts of the northern Pacific Ocean. In ecosystems, otters act as important predators, helping maintain balance by controlling fish and invertebrate populations.

Culturally, otters are often associated with curiosity, playfulness, and intelligence. Unfortunately, many species have faced population declines due to habitat destruction, pollution, and hunting for their fur. Conservation efforts, such as habitat protection and pollution control, have helped some populations recover, though several species remain threatened.
