An owl is a type of bird known for its distinctive appearance and nocturnal habits. Owls belong to the order Strigiformes and are characterized by large, forward-facing eyes, a flat face with a facial disc that helps funnel sound to their ears, and a sharp, hooked beak for tearing prey. Their eyes are fixed in their sockets, so they must turn their heads—sometimes up to 270 degrees—to see around them.

Most owls are nocturnal hunters, relying on exceptional night vision and acute hearing to locate prey such as rodents, insects, small birds, and other animals. Their feathers are specially adapted to allow nearly silent flight, which makes them stealthy predators. There are roughly 200 species of owls, ranging from the small elf owl, which can weigh as little as 40 grams, to the powerful Eurasian eagle-owl, which can have a wingspan over six feet.

Owls also carry significant cultural symbolism. In many cultures, they are seen as symbols of wisdom and knowledge, though in some traditions they are considered omens. They are solitary creatures for the most part, and many species are territorial, especially during breeding season.
