A panda is a type of bear known for its distinctive black-and-white fur and gentle demeanor. The most well-known species is the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), native to the mountainous forests of central China. Giant pandas primarily eat bamboo, which makes up more than 99% of their diet, though they occasionally eat small animals or other plants. Their strong jaw muscles and specialized molars allow them to crush tough bamboo stalks efficiently.

Pandas are solitary animals, usually spending most of their day foraging and eating. Despite their seemingly slow and clumsy appearance, they are capable climbers and swimmers. They communicate through vocalizations and scent markings rather than social interaction.

There is also the red panda (Ailurus fulgens), which is smaller, reddish-brown, and more raccoon-like in appearance. Despite its name, it is not closely related to the giant panda but shares some dietary preferences, like bamboo.

Pandas have become a global symbol of wildlife conservation, largely because habitat loss and low birth rates in the wild have made them vulnerable. Conservation efforts in China, including protected reserves and breeding programs, have helped stabilize giant panda populations.

In essence, a panda is a unique bear species known for its iconic coloration, specialized diet, and symbolic role in conservation.
