A Parasaurolophus is a genus of dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 76 to 73 million years ago. It is part of the hadrosaurid family, commonly known as duck-billed dinosaurs, due to their flat, broad snouts. Parasaurolophus is most famous for its distinctive long, backward-curving cranial crest, which could reach up to one and a half meters in length in adults. The function of this crest is still debated, but paleontologists believe it may have been used for visual display, species recognition, thermoregulation, or even producing low-frequency sounds by acting as a resonating chamber.

Parasaurolophus was herbivorous, feeding on plants like conifers, ferns, and cycads. Its teeth were adapted for grinding vegetation, and it likely had a complex chewing mechanism to process tough plant material efficiently. It could walk both bipedally and quadrupedally, meaning it could move on two legs when running or on four legs when grazing. Adults could grow up to 10 meters (33 feet) long and weigh several tons, making them relatively large but not among the largest hadrosaurs.

Fossils of Parasaurolophus have primarily been found in North America, particularly in Canada and the western United States. Three species are currently recognized, differing mainly in crest shape and size. Juvenile Parasaurolophus had smaller, less developed crests, which suggests that the crest grew as the animal matured, likely playing a role in age and sexual display.

Its combination of a distinctive crest, herbivorous diet, and adaptable locomotion makes Parasaurolophus one of the most recognizable and intriguing dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous period. It’s often depicted in media because of its striking silhouette and potential for vocalizations.
