The Silken Windhound is a relatively modern sighthound breed, developed in the United States during the late twentieth century. It was created by crossing Borzois with Whippets and later incorporating other sighthound lines, resulting in a dog that embodies grace, speed, and elegance while being smaller and more manageable than the Borzoi. These dogs are known for their long, silky coats, which is where the breed derives its name, and for their lean, athletic build that allows them to excel in coursing and other agility activities.
Silken Windhounds typically stand between 18 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 25 to 55 pounds, placing them firmly in the medium-sized category. Their coats can be found in a wide variety of colors and patterns, and the silky fur requires only moderate grooming, making them easier to maintain than some other long-haired breeds. They are known for having a distinctly refined look, with narrow heads, deep chests, and the characteristic curves of a true sighthound.
Temperamentally, Silken Windhounds are affectionate and intelligent, often bonding closely with their families. Unlike some aloof sighthounds, they are notably friendly and tend to get along well with children and other pets, though their coursing instincts may still lead them to chase smaller animals outdoors. They thrive on companionship and can become anxious if left alone for long periods. Despite their athletic background, they are surprisingly adaptable to home life, enjoying bursts of speed in a yard or park but being equally content to curl up quietly indoors.
The breed has steadily grown in popularity, especially among those who admire sighthounds but prefer a more compact and manageable size compared to breeds like the Borzoi or Greyhound. Silken Windhounds are also known for their longevity, often living well into their mid to late teens, which is longer than many breeds of similar size. Their combination of beauty, agility, and gentle nature has earned them a loyal following worldwide, even though they are not yet recognized by all major kennel clubs.
