A Portuguese Water Dog is a medium-sized, athletic breed originally developed in Portugal to assist fishermen. These dogs were used to herd fish into nets, retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and act as couriers between ships and shore. They are highly intelligent, energetic, and extremely trainable, making them excellent working dogs as well as companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please mean they excel in obedience, agility, and water-based activities.

Physically, they have a strong, muscular build with webbed feet, which help them swim efficiently. Their coat is dense and curly or wavy, providing insulation in cold water, and they are considered hypoallergenic since they shed very little. Common coat colors are black, brown, or various shades of black-and-white. Regular grooming is necessary to prevent matting.

Portuguese Water Dogs are known for their loyalty and affectionate nature, forming close bonds with their families. They are often energetic and playful, needing regular exercise and mental stimulation. They tend to get along well with children and other pets if socialized early but can be wary of strangers. Their intelligence and energy make them unsuitable for owners who cannot provide consistent training and activity.

Historically, this breed nearly faced extinction in the 20th century, but dedicated breeders revived it. Today, they are popular not just as working dogs but also as family pets and show dogs. Notably, they gained public attention when a Portuguese Water Dog was chosen as the family dog of a U.S. president.

In short, the Portuguese Water Dog is a versatile, intelligent, and loyal breed with strong ties to maritime work, excelling in active homes where they receive plenty of attention and exercise.
