The Pumi is a Hungarian herding dog breed known for its lively, energetic, and intelligent nature. It is a medium-sized dog, typically weighing between 20–29 pounds (9–13 kg) and standing around 14–18 inches (35–46 cm) tall at the shoulder. The breed has a distinct appearance, with a curly or wavy coat that is dense and weather-resistant, often gray, black, fawn, or white. One of its most recognizable features is its expressive, erect ears that give it a highly alert and mischievous look.

Pumis were originally bred for herding livestock, especially sheep, in Hungary, and they still retain strong herding instincts. They are agile, quick, and highly trainable, excelling in tasks that require speed, intelligence, and problem-solving. They are also known for their “bouncing” gait and vocal nature, often using short barks to control livestock.

As companions, Pumis are affectionate, playful, and alert, making them excellent family pets for active households. They need plenty of mental stimulation and physical exercise; without it, they can become bored and potentially destructive. They are also highly social and usually bond closely with their families, though they may be cautious around strangers.

In summary, the Pumi is a small-to-medium, intelligent, and energetic Hungarian herding dog, recognized for its curly coat, lively personality, and strong work ethic. They thrive in environments where they have a purpose, plenty of activity, and close interaction with humans.
