A Ragdoll cat is a large, affectionate, and strikingly beautiful breed known for its docile temperament and semi-long, silky fur. They were developed in the 1960s in California by a breeder named Ann Baker. Ragdolls are especially famous for their tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up, which is how they earned their name. This trait makes them very cuddly and appealing as companion pets.

Physically, Ragdolls are muscular and robust, with broad chests and large, expressive blue eyes. Their fur is soft, plush, and requires regular grooming to prevent matting. They have a color-point pattern, meaning their extremities—face, ears, tail, and sometimes legs—are darker than the rest of their body. Common patterns include colorpoint, mitted, and bicolor, with colors ranging from seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, and more.

Temperamentally, Ragdolls are known for being calm, gentle, and social. They often follow their owners around the house, enjoy interactive play, and tend to get along well with children and other pets. Unlike many cats, they rarely scratch or bite, which contributes to their reputation as a “dog-like” cat in terms of loyalty and friendliness.

Because of their laid-back personality and affectionate nature, Ragdolls are excellent indoor cats. They are intelligent and can even be trained to fetch or walk on a leash. While generally healthy, they can be prone to certain genetic conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, so responsible breeders screen for health issues.

In short, Ragdolls are ideal for owners seeking a calm, affectionate, and visually stunning feline companion. They are less independent than other breeds, preferring constant companionship and offering a remarkably gentle and loving presence.
