A reindeer is a species of deer native to the Arctic, subarctic, tundra, and mountainous regions of northern Europe, Siberia, and North America. They are known for their thick fur, which helps them survive in extremely cold climates, and for their large, spreading antlers, which both males and females grow—unlike most deer species, where typically only males have antlers. Reindeer are herbivores, feeding mainly on grasses, mosses, and lichens, especially a type called reindeer lichen, which is crucial for their winter survival.

Reindeer are highly adapted to cold environments. Their hooves change with the seasons: in summer, the pads are soft for walking on wet ground, and in winter, the pads shrink and tighten, exposing the rim of the hoof to cut into ice and snow for better traction. They are also known for long migrations, sometimes covering hundreds of miles between seasonal grazing areas.

Domesticated reindeer have been herded by humans—especially by Sami, Nenets, and other Arctic peoples—for thousands of years, providing meat, milk, hides, and transportation. In popular culture, reindeer are famously associated with Christmas, depicted as flying animals that pull Santa Claus’s sleigh.

In short, a reindeer is a hardy, cold-adapted deer species, notable for its antlers, migratory behavior, and close relationship with humans in northern cultures.
