A rhinoceros is a large, herbivorous mammal known for its thick, protective skin and one or more prominent horns on its snout. Rhinos are part of the family Rhinocerotidae and are native to Africa and Asia. There are five extant species: the White Rhino and Black Rhino in Africa, and the Indian Rhino, Javan Rhino, and Sumatran Rhino in Asia.
Rhinos are generally massive animals, with some species weighing over 2,000 kilograms (around 4,400 pounds). Despite their bulk, they can run surprisingly fast, reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph) in short bursts. Their horns, made of keratin (the same protein as human hair and nails), are used for defense, digging for water, and breaking branches.
These animals are mostly solitary and have poor eyesight but excellent senses of smell and hearing. Rhinos are herbivores, feeding on grasses, leaves, shoots, and branches, depending on the species.
Unfortunately, rhinos are critically endangered due to poaching for their horns and habitat loss. Conservation efforts, including anti-poaching measures and wildlife reserves, aim to protect them, but some species, like the Javan and Sumatran rhinos, remain extremely rare.
