A Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large, muscular dog breed originally developed in Southern Africa, specifically in what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia). They were bred by European settlers in the 19th century by crossing European hunting dogs with local African dogs to create a versatile hunter and protector. Ridgebacks are especially famous for hunting lions, earning them the nickname “African Lion Hound,” though today they are mostly companion animals and family pets.
Physically, Rhodesian Ridgebacks are strong, athletic, and symmetrical. They are well-known for the distinctive “ridge” of hair along their back that grows in the opposite direction of the rest of the coat—a defining trait of the breed. Their short coat is usually a light to reddish wheaten color, though shades can vary slightly. They have a deep chest, long legs, and a dignified, alert expression. Males typically weigh between 40–45 kg (88–99 lbs) and stand 63–69 cm (25–27 inches) tall, while females are slightly smaller.
Temperament-wise, Ridgebacks are intelligent, independent, and loyal. They form strong bonds with their families but can be reserved or aloof around strangers. Their hunting and guarding instincts mean they can be protective, so early socialization and consistent training are important. Despite their strength and stamina, they can be gentle and affectionate with those they trust.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are also active and require regular exercise. They enjoy running, hiking, and playtime, which helps manage their high energy and prevents boredom. Their short coat makes grooming relatively easy, though they benefit from regular brushing to remove loose hair.
