A Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed of dog originally from Southern Africa, developed by the Khoikhoi people and later refined by European settlers. They are medium-to-large in size, typically weighing between 36–41 kg (80–90 lbs) and standing about 61–69 cm (24–27 inches) at the shoulder. Their most distinctive feature is the “ridge” of hair along their back that grows in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat, giving the breed its name. This ridge is considered a hallmark of the breed and is a key factor in breed standards.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks were originally bred for hunting and guarding, particularly for tracking and baying large game like lions, which earned them the nickname “African Lion Hound.” They are known for their courage, intelligence, and endurance, but they are also independent and sometimes stubborn, requiring consistent training and early socialization. Despite their hunting origins, they are generally gentle with family members and can be affectionate, making them good companions.
Their coat is short, dense, and usually light to red wheaten in color, with minimal grooming required. Ridgebacks are active dogs, needing regular exercise to stay healthy and mentally stimulated. They are also known for being alert and protective, which makes them effective watchdogs, though not typically aggressive without cause.
Overall, Rhodesian Ridgebacks combine athleticism, loyalty, and a dignified presence, but they thrive best in homes where they can get plenty of physical activity and mental engagement.
