A rooster is an adult male chicken, scientifically known as Gallus gallus domesticus. Roosters are easily distinguishable from hens (female chickens) by several features: they typically have larger, more brightly colored combs and wattles, longer and more pointed tail feathers, and more vivid plumage. They are known for their crowing, which is a loud call often associated with dawn, although roosters can crow at any time of day.

Roosters play a key role in a flock’s social structure. They often act as protectors, alerting hens to predators and sometimes defending them. They also establish a pecking order, determining dominance among other roosters and chickens. In addition to their protective and social roles, roosters contribute to reproduction, fertilizing eggs that hens lay, which can then develop into chicks.

Behaviorally, roosters can be aggressive, especially toward other males, but they also engage in courtship displays to attract hens. Their crowing, posture, and feather displays are all part of this behavior. In many cultures, roosters are symbolic, representing traits like vigilance, courage, and masculinity. They are also commonly kept on farms not just for breeding but historically for their role in alerting humans to sunrise.

In short, a rooster is the male chicken that serves both reproductive and social functions within a flock, distinguished by its colorful appearance, crowing, and protective instincts.
