A Saimiri, commonly known as a squirrel monkey, is a small primate native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. They are members of the Cebidae family, which also includes capuchin monkeys, and are renowned for their agility, intelligence, and highly social behavior. Adult squirrel monkeys typically weigh between 0.5 and 1.1 kilograms (1–2.5 pounds) and measure about 25–35 centimeters (10–14 inches) in body length, with a tail that is often longer than their body and used primarily for balance rather than grasping.

Squirrel monkeys are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day, and they spend most of their time in the canopy of tropical forests, leaping from branch to branch with remarkable precision. Their diet is omnivorous, consisting mainly of fruits, insects, flowers, small vertebrates, and occasionally eggs, allowing them to adapt to seasonal changes in food availability.

One of the most striking features of Saimiris is their distinctive facial coloration: they have a pale face with dark markings around the eyes that resemble a mask, giving them an expressive, almost cartoon-like appearance. Their hands and feet are dexterous, enabling them to handle small objects and forage efficiently.

Squirrel monkeys are highly social animals, living in large troops that can number from 20 to over 500 individuals, depending on the species and habitat.
