A Saint Bernard is a large, muscular dog breed originally bred in the Swiss Alps, primarily by monks at the hospice of the Great St. Bernard Pass, to help rescue travelers lost in snowstorms. They are known for their impressive size, strength, and gentle temperament. Adult males typically weigh between 140–180 pounds (64–82 kg) and stand around 28–30 inches (71–76 cm) tall at the shoulder, while females are slightly smaller. Their coats can be short or long, usually with a white base and red, brown, or brindle markings.
Saint Bernards are famous for their calm, patient, and friendly nature, making them excellent family pets. They are highly social dogs that bond closely with their human families, often showing a remarkable sense of loyalty and protection. Despite their size, they are gentle with children and usually good with other animals.
Historically, Saint Bernards were used as rescue dogs because of their incredible sense of smell and strength in navigating deep snow. They were often depicted carrying small barrels of brandy around their necks, though this is mostly a myth. Today, they are primarily companion animals, therapy dogs, and sometimes still participate in search-and-rescue work in snowy regions.
