A Scottish Terrier, often affectionately called a “Scottie,” is a small but sturdy breed of dog that originated in Scotland. Recognized for its distinctive appearance, the Scottie has a compact body, short legs, and a wiry, weather-resistant double coat. Its most iconic features are its long beard, bushy eyebrows, and erect, pointed ears, which give it a dignified and alert expression. Most commonly, their coats are black, though they can also be brindle or wheaten (a pale yellowish color).
The breed was developed in the Scottish Highlands as a working terrier, bred to hunt vermin such as rats, foxes, and badgers. Their strong jaws, keen sense of smell, and determined nature made them excellent at pursuing prey underground. In terms of temperament, Scottish Terriers are known for being loyal, confident, and somewhat reserved with strangers, though deeply affectionate with their families. They are intelligent dogs but tend to have a mind of their own, which can make training a matter of patience and consistency. s tall at the shoulder. Despite their small stature, they carry themselves with a dignified, almost aristocratic air. They have moderate exercise needs, enjoying daily walks and playtime, but they are not overly demanding compared to more high-energy terrier breeds. Grooming requires regular brushing and trimming to maintain their signature look.
Scottish Terriers have been popular companions for centuries and even served as mascots and symbols, famously associated with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s beloved Scottie, Fala. Today, they remain cherished for their distinctive charm, loyal companionship, and spirited personality.
