A Scottish Terrier, often affectionately called a “Scottie,” is a small, sturdy breed of dog that originated in Scotland. They are known for their distinctive appearance: a compact, muscular body; short legs; a long, rectangular-shaped head; erect ears; and a dense, wiry coat that often comes in black, brindle, or wheaten colors. Their expressive eyebrows and beard give them a characteristic dignified and somewhat stern expression.

Despite their small size, Scottish Terriers are confident, independent, and sometimes stubborn dogs. They were originally bred for hunting and killing vermin, which explains their alertness, courage, and strong prey drive. Scotties are intelligent and loyal, forming strong bonds with their families, but they can be wary of strangers. They often exhibit a spirited and determined personality, earning them the nickname “the little dog with the big heart.”

Scottish Terriers are relatively low-energy indoors but enjoy walks and outdoor playtime. Their wiry coats require regular grooming and occasional hand-stripping to maintain their texture and prevent matting. Historically, they were popular among Scottish nobility and became internationally recognized in the early 20th century, partly due to their appearance in media and their association with figures such as U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose dog Fala was a famous Scottie.

Overall, a Scottish Terrier combines a bold, dignified personality with loyalty and intelligence, making them both a charming companion and a proud, independent little hunter.
