A sheep is a domesticated mammal scientifically known as Ovis aries, raised primarily for its wool, meat (lamb or mutton), and milk. Sheep are part of the Bovidae family, which also includes goats and cattle. They are known for their thick, woolly coats, which can be sheared and processed into textiles, and for their relatively docile, social behavior, as they tend to flock together for safety.

Sheep are herbivores, grazing mostly on grasses, herbs, and shrubs. They have a four-chambered stomach that allows them to efficiently digest fibrous plant material. Physiologically, sheep have strong senses of smell and hearing, and their eyes have a wide field of vision, which helps them detect predators.

Domestication of sheep dates back over 10,000 years, and humans have selectively bred them for traits like wool quality, meat yield, and adaptability to different climates. There are hundreds of sheep breeds worldwide, ranging from the fine-fleeced Merino to the hardy, coarse-wool breeds used in rough terrains.

Beyond their economic value, sheep play cultural and symbolic roles in many societies, representing innocence, gentleness, or sacrifice in literature, religion, and folklore.

In short, a sheep is a social, herbivorous, wool-producing mammal closely associated with human agriculture and culture.
