A Shih Tzu is a small, toy breed of dog originally bred in China as a companion for royalty. Its name translates to “lion dog,” reflecting the breed’s appearance, which was meant to resemble the Chinese guardian lions seen in temples and palaces. Shih Tzus are known for their distinctive long, flowing coat, short muzzle, and round face with large, expressive eyes, giving them a charming and almost “teddy bear” look.
They are friendly, affectionate, and generally good with families, children, and other pets. Despite their small size, they have a confident and sometimes stubborn personality, which can make training a bit challenging if patience isn’t applied. Shih Tzus are indoor dogs who enjoy being close to their owners and don’t require extensive exercise, though they do benefit from daily short walks and playtime.
Their long coat requires regular grooming, including brushing several times a week and periodic trimming to prevent matting. The breed is prone to certain health issues, including breathing difficulties due to their short muzzle (brachycephalic), eye problems, and dental issues.
