A sloth is a slow-moving mammal native to Central and South America, known for its distinctive leisurely lifestyle and arboreal (tree-dwelling) habits. There are six species of sloths, divided into two families: two-toed sloths (Megalonychidae) and three-toed sloths (Bradypodidae). Despite their differences, all sloths share some key characteristics.
Physically, sloths have long limbs and curved claws that help them hang effortlessly from tree branches. Their fur often hosts algae, which provides camouflage in the forest canopy. They have a low metabolic rate and digest food very slowly, which is why they move so slowly—usually only a few meters per minute. Sloths primarily eat leaves, buds, and occasionally fruit, relying on a specialized, multi-chambered stomach to ferment tough plant material.
Behaviorally, sloths are solitary and spend most of their lives upside down in trees. They descend to the ground infrequently, typically only to defecate. They are also excellent swimmers, capable of moving faster in water than on land. Sloths have a surprisingly long lifespan for their size, often living 20–30 years in the wild.
Sloths are important to their ecosystems because their slow metabolism and algae-covered fur support a mini-ecosystem of insects and microorganisms, and their leaf-eating helps shape the forest canopy. They have become cultural icons for their slow pace and relaxed demeanor, often symbolizing patience and leisure.
