A sloth is a slow-moving mammal known for its deliberate movements and tree-dwelling lifestyle. Native to Central and South America, sloths spend most of their lives hanging upside down from branches in tropical rainforests. They belong to the order Pilosa, which also includes anteaters, and there are two main families: two-toed sloths (Megalonychidae) and three-toed sloths (Bradypodidae), distinguished by the number of claws on their front limbs.

Sloths have adapted to a low-energy lifestyle, largely due to their diet of leaves, which are tough to digest and low in calories. Their slow metabolism allows them to survive on this limited diet but also makes them vulnerable to predators. To avoid detection, sloths move slowly and remain still for long periods, blending into the forest canopy. Their fur often hosts algae, which provides additional camouflage and may even contribute nutrients.

Despite their slow movement on land, sloths are surprisingly good swimmers, using a slow, dog-paddle style to navigate rivers and streams. They sleep a lot—up to 15–20 hours a day—and are mostly solitary animals, only coming together for mating. Sloths have a lifespan of around 20–30 years in the wild and are considered important for their ecosystems, as they contribute to nutrient cycling in the forest canopy.

In short, a sloth is a slow, tree-dwelling mammal perfectly adapted to life in the rainforest, balancing minimal energy use with camouflage and survival.
