A snake is a legless, elongated reptile that belongs to the suborder Serpentes. Snakes are found on every continent except Antarctica and have adapted to a wide range of habitats, including forests, deserts, swamps, and oceans. Unlike many other animals, snakes lack limbs, eyelids, and external ears, relying on other specialized features to survive.
Snakes are carnivorous, feeding on a variety of prey such as rodents, birds, eggs, amphibians, fish, and even other reptiles. They swallow their prey whole, aided by highly flexible jaws and stretchy skin. Some snakes are venomous, using toxins to immobilize or kill prey and for defense, while others rely on constriction to subdue their food.
Anatomically, snakes have a long, muscular body covered in overlapping scales, which help reduce friction while moving. They sense their environment through heat-sensitive pits (in some species), a keen sense of smell using their forked tongue, and vibration detection. Their internal organs are elongated and often asymmetrically arranged to fit their slender bodies, and many species have specialized adaptations like venom glands or infrared vision.
Snakes play a vital role in ecosystems by controlling populations of pests and maintaining the balance of food chains. Despite their sometimes fearsome reputation, the majority of snakes are harmless to humans and are important both ecologically and culturally in many societies.
This Bust is 15cm tall.
