It was initially bred from bulldogs and terriers to create a dog that was strong, courageous, and agile, primarily for bull-baiting—a cruel sport at the time—and later for ratting and as a companion dog.
Physically, Staffies are compact but powerful, with a broad skull, strong jaw, and a well-defined, muscular body. They typically weigh between 24 to 38 pounds (11–17 kg) and stand about 14 to 16 inches (35–41 cm) at the shoulder. Their short, smooth coat comes in a variety of colors including red, brindle, black, blue, fawn, and white, often with white markings. Their eyes are dark and expressive, giving them an intelligent and alert appearance.
Temperament-wise, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are renowned for being affectionate, loyal, and people-oriented. They are especially known for their love of children, earning them the nickname “nanny dog” in the UK. Despite their tough appearance, they are gentle and playful with family members.
