The Tibetan Spaniel is a small, intelligent dog breed originating from Tibet, where it was historically kept in monasteries as a companion and watchdog. Despite its name, it is not a true spaniel in the traditional hunting sense; rather, it belongs to the toy group and is more closely related to other ancient Asian companion dogs. Tibetan Spaniels are known for their alert, lively, and affectionate temperament. They are highly social and form strong bonds with their owners, often following them from room to room and enjoying close human interaction.

Physically, Tibetan Spaniels are compact and sturdy, with a slightly domed head, expressive dark eyes, and a short, blunt muzzle. Their ears are pendant-shaped, and they have a plumed tail that typically curls over the back. Their coat is medium-length, silky, and can vary in color, often with a ruff of longer hair around the neck giving them a lion-like appearance. While they are small, typically weighing between seven to fifteen pounds, they have a confident and curious demeanor, often behaving as though they are much larger than they actually are.

Temperamentally, Tibetan Spaniels are intelligent, independent, and sometimes stubborn, reflecting their history of living semi-autonomously in monasteries. They are highly alert and make excellent watchdogs, often barking to alert their owners of visitors, but they are not aggressive. They enjoy mental stimulation, gentle play, and short walks but also value comfort and relaxation. Their longevity is notable, often living into their mid-teens, and with proper care, they remain healthy and active well into old age. This breed thrives in environments where they receive attention, companionship, and mental engagement, making them ideal for families or individuals seeking a loyal and affectionate small dog.
