Standing only about nine to eleven inches tall and weighing around seven to ten pounds, it is one of the toy breeds but still carries the temperament of a terrier. Its face is one of its most recognizable features, with a short muzzle, prominent dark eyes, and a beard and mustache that give it a comical yet endearing look. The coat is dense, wiry, and slightly shaggy, typically black but also found in shades of gray, silver, red, or black and tan.

Despite its small size, the Affenpinscher has a confident and spirited character. It was originally bred as a ratter, meant to control vermin in kitchens, stables, and shops, which explains its alertness and quick reflexes.
