A Velociraptor is a genus of small to medium-sized theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, roughly 75 to 71 million years ago. It is one of the most famous dinosaurs, largely due to its portrayal in popular media like Jurassic Park, though many of those depictions exaggerate its size and behavior. In reality, Velociraptors were much smaller than the movies suggest, about the size of a large turkey, measuring roughly 2 meters (6.5 feet) long from snout to tail and standing about 0.5 meters (1.6 feet) tall at the hip. They weighed around 15–20 kilograms (33–44 pounds).

Velociraptors were bipedal predators, meaning they walked on two legs, and they were agile hunters. They had long, stiff tails for balance, strong legs for running, and sharp, curved claws on their hands and feet. Notably, each foot had a large, retractable sickle-shaped claw on the second toe, which they likely used to grasp or slash prey. Fossil evidence shows they had feathers, suggesting a closer evolutionary relationship to modern birds than previously thought.

Their skulls were long and narrow, with a mouth full of sharp teeth designed for tearing flesh. Fossilized remains indicate they may have hunted in packs, though this is debated among paleontologists. They primarily preyed on smaller dinosaurs, mammals, and possibly scavenged when the opportunity arose.

In summary, Velociraptors were small, feathered, highly agile carnivorous dinosaurs with strong hunting adaptations. They are a striking example of the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds and are much more fascinating scientifically than the oversized, reptilian version often shown in films.
