A walrus is a large marine mammal known for its distinctive long tusks, whiskers, and bulk. It belongs to the pinniped family, which also includes seals and sea lions. Walruses have thick, wrinkled skin covered with sparse hair, and beneath it lies a substantial layer of blubber, which keeps them insulated in the cold Arctic and sub-Arctic waters where they live. Their tusks are elongated canine teeth that can grow up to a meter long in males, and they use them for fighting, dominance displays, and even helping to haul themselves out of the water onto ice or land.
