A walrus is a large marine mammal known for its distinctive long tusks, whiskers, and bulk. It belongs to the pinniped family, which also includes seals and sea lions. Adult walruses are massive: males can weigh up to 1,700 kilograms (about 3,700 pounds) and grow over 3 meters (10 feet) long, while females are generally smaller.

Walruses have thick, wrinkled skin covered with sparse hair, and beneath it lies a substantial layer of blubber, which keeps them insulated in the cold Arctic and sub-Arctic waters where they live. Their tusks are elongated canine teeth that can grow up to a meter long in males, and they use them for fighting, dominance displays, and even helping to haul themselves out of the water onto ice or land.

They are social animals, often gathering in large groups called herds. Walruses primarily feed on benthic invertebrates like clams, mussels, and worms, which they detect using sensitive whiskers (vibrissae) and then suck from the sea floor. Despite their bulk, they are good swimmers, using their flippers to move gracefully through water, but they are also slow and clumsy on land.

Walruses have been an important species for Arctic Indigenous peoples for centuries, providing meat, tusks, and hides. Today, they face threats from climate change, particularly the loss of sea ice, which affects their ability to rest, breed, and access food.

In short, a walrus is a massive, social, tusked marine mammal adapted to life in cold northern waters, recognized for its iconic appearance and crucial ecological role in Arctic ecosystems.
