A warthog is a wild member of the pig family (Suidae) native to sub-Saharan Africa. Its scientific name is Phacochoerus africanus. Warthogs are easily recognizable due to their large, flat heads, prominent facial warts (which are thickened skin pads that protect them during fights), and curved tusks that can grow up to 10–25 inches. These tusks are used for digging, fighting, and defense against predators.
Warthogs have a stocky, muscular body covered with sparse bristly hair and a mane along their back. They are typically brown or grey and have a distinctive tufted tail that sticks up when they run. They can weigh between 100–250 pounds, with males generally larger than females.
They are omnivores, feeding mostly on grasses, roots, berries, and occasionally small animals or carrion. Warthogs are well-adapted to dry environments and often use abandoned burrows made by other animals for shelter, backing in with their tusks facing outward to defend themselves. They are fast runners and can reach speeds up to 30 mph when escaping predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas.
Socially, warthogs usually live in small groups called sounders, often consisting of females and their young, while males are more solitary or form bachelor groups. Despite their somewhat intimidating appearance, they are generally non-aggressive unless threatened.
Warthogs play a significant role in their ecosystem, helping to aerate soil while foraging and serving as prey for large African carnivores. They are also culturally significant in some regions and are occasionally hunted for meat or sport.
This Bust is 15cm tall.
