A Water Elemental is a creature in Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) that embodies the raw essence of water. It is classified as an elemental, meaning it is a being formed from one of the classical elements—earth, air, fire, or water—and is usually summoned, bound, or encountered in its natural elemental plane. Water elementals are typically made of swirling, semi-transparent water and can take shapes that resemble humans, serpents, or waves, depending on their will and the environment.

In D&D, water elementals have fluid movement. They can move through small openings, climb over obstacles, and even swim effortlessly. They can merge with bodies of water to hide or ambush prey. Their attacks often involve bludgeoning with water—for instance, sweeping foes with waves or enveloping them in water to drown or crush. They can also manipulate water to some extent, creating currents, jets, or water whips.

Mechanically, water elementals are resistant or immune to certain damage types, like nonmagical physical attacks or poison, but they are vulnerable to lightning in most D&D editions, reflecting their elemental nature. They are often summoned by spellcasters, particularly wizards and clerics, through spells like Conjure Elemental, and serve as guardians, allies, or obstacles in adventures.

In storytelling, water elementals represent the untamable, flowing, and destructive power of water. They might guard lakes, rivers, or coastal areas, and their presence can signify dangerous currents, floods, or storms. They are both a tactical challenge in combat and a narrative tool for environmental hazards and magical encounters.
