A West Highland Terrier, often called a “Westie” is a small, sturdy dog breed originally from Scotland. They were bred in the 19th century to hunt small game such as rats, foxes, and badgers in the rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands, which is reflected in their fearless, tenacious character. Despite their small size, Westies are known for their bold personality, intelligence, and strong sense of independence.
Physically, they typically weigh between 15–20 pounds (7–9 kg) and stand around 10–11 inches (25–28 cm) tall at the shoulder. Their most distinctive feature is their dense, double coat, which is harsh and white, providing protection against cold and rough weather. They have a compact, muscular build, dark almond-shaped eyes, and pointed ears, giving them a sharp, alert expression.
Westies are energetic and require regular exercise, but they are equally suited to apartment living if properly stimulated. They are friendly and affectionate with family members, though they can be wary of strangers, displaying the natural terrier tendency toward independence and assertiveness. Their intelligence and eagerness make them trainable, though they may show occasional stubbornness.
Health-wise, West Highland Terriers are generally robust but can be prone to skin issues and certain genetic conditions like hip dysplasia or patellar luxation. Their coat requires regular grooming to maintain its texture and prevent matting.
Overall, a West Highland Terrier is a lively, confident, and affectionate companion with a distinctive appearance and a bold personality, making them both charming and spirited family pets.
