A whippet is a breed of dog that is part of the sighthound family, closely related to greyhounds. They are medium-sized dogs, typically weighing between 25–40 pounds and standing about 18–22 inches tall at the shoulder. Whippets are known for their sleek, athletic build, long legs, and streamlined body, which make them incredibly fast runners—capable of reaching speeds up to 35–40 miles per hour. This speed earned them the nickname “the poor man’s racehorse,” as they were historically raced and hunted in England, often as a more affordable alternative to greyhounds.
Temperament-wise, whippets are gentle, affectionate, and intelligent. They tend to form strong bonds with their families, are usually good with children, and often get along with other dogs. Despite their high bursts of energy, they are surprisingly calm indoors, earning the nickname “couch potato” dog when at home. Whippets have short, smooth coats that come in a wide range of colors, which makes grooming relatively easy.
