A wombat is a stocky, short-legged marsupial native to Australia. Belonging to the family Vombatidae, wombats are herbivores that mainly feed on grasses, roots, and bark. They are most notable for their burrowing habits, creating extensive tunnel systems with their strong claws and muscular limbs, which provide shelter and protection from predators. Wombats have a distinctive backward-facing pouch, which prevents dirt from entering while they dig.

Adult wombats typically weigh between 20 and 35 kilograms (44–77 pounds), though some species can be larger, and measure about 1 meter (3.3 feet) in length. Their fur ranges from sandy brown to grey or black, depending on the species. Wombats have a slow metabolism, which allows them to survive on a relatively low-energy diet, and they produce cube-shaped feces—a rare trait in the animal kingdom—used for marking territory.

There are three species of wombat: the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus), the southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons), and the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii), the latter being critically endangered. Wombats are mostly nocturnal, emerging at night to forage, and are generally solitary, except for mothers with young. Despite their cute and cuddly appearance, wombats can be surprisingly powerful and defensive when threatened.
