A Xolo is short for Xoloitzcuintli, a dog breed from Mexico. The name comes from the Aztec god Xolotl and the Nahuatl word itzcuintli, which means “dog.” Xolos are ancient dogs, dating back over 3,000 years, and were considered sacred by the Aztecs. They were believed to guide the souls of the dead through the underworld and were often buried with their owners.
Xolos come in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. They have a distinctive appearance: many are hairless, though there is a coated variety, with smooth skin, erect ears, and a lean, muscular build. Hairless Xolos are known for their warm skin, which is often a unique color ranging from black to reddish-brown. Their lack of fur makes them prone to sunburn, so they need some protection in strong sunlight.
Temperament-wise, Xolos are intelligent, loyal, and alert. They can be protective of their families but are usually gentle and affectionate with people they trust. They are also known for their calm, quiet demeanor, making them good companions and watchdogs.
Because of their ancient heritage, hairless Xolos are sometimes seen as a link to pre-Columbian cultures, and the breed is still highly regarded in Mexico for its history and uniqueness.
