A Yorkshire Terrier, often called a “Yorkie,” is a small breed of dog originally developed in the mid-19th century in Yorkshire, England. They were initially bred to catch rats in textile mills and mines, making them agile, tenacious, and highly energetic despite their tiny size. Today, they are primarily companion animals, prized for their spirited personality and striking appearance.
Yorkies typically weigh around 4 to 7 pounds (1.8–3.2 kg) and stand about 7 to 8 inches (18–20 cm) tall at the shoulder. They have a distinctive long, silky coat that is usually steel-blue on the body with a rich tan on the face, chest, and legs. Their hair grows continuously, so regular grooming is essential to keep it tangle-free and healthy.
Personality-wise, Yorkshire Terriers are known for being confident, intelligent, and lively. They are often described as “big dogs in small bodies” because they have a bold, sometimes stubborn nature and are very alert to their surroundings, which also makes them good watchdogs. Yorkies can be affectionate and loyal to their owners but may be wary of strangers.
Despite their small stature, they require regular exercise and mental stimulation. They thrive in homes where they can interact frequently with people and enjoy playtime or short walks. They are also known for bonding closely with one or two family members.
In short, a Yorkshire Terrier is a tiny dog with a big personality, elegant appearance, and strong, loyal character—making it a popular choice for people seeking a small but lively companion.
