A Bearded Collie, often affectionately called a “Beardie,” is a medium-sized herding dog breed from Scotland. It is known for its distinctive shaggy coat, energetic temperament, and strong working background. Historically, these dogs were bred to herd sheep and cattle across the rugged Scottish Highlands, where their stamina, agility, and intelligence made them highly valued by shepherds and farmers.
Physically, the Bearded Collie stands about 20 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between 45 and 55 pounds. Its name comes from the long hair that forms a “beard” around its muzzle, giving it a characteristic wise and somewhat comical look. The double coat is long, flat, and harsh to the touch on the outer layer, with a softer undercoat that protects against harsh weather. Common coat colors include black, blue, brown, or fawn, often with white markings. Puppies are usually born darker and their coats lighten as they mature, a process called “fading.”
Bearded Collies are lively, playful, and affectionate, often described as bouncy and full of enthusiasm. They are intelligent and quick learners, though they can also be a bit independent or stubborn, requiring patient and consistent training. Because of their herding heritage, they thrive on having a job to do, whether that’s agility, obedience, herding trials, or simply engaging play with their family. They are generally friendly with children and other animals, making them excellent companions in active households.
Their grooming needs are significant: the long coat requires regular brushing several times a week to prevent matting and tangling. They are also high-energy dogs that need daily exercise to stay healthy and content. Without enough activity and mental stimulation, a Bearded Collie may become restless or mischievous.
Today, Beardies are cherished both as family pets and working dogs, admired for their cheerful personality, boundless energy, and unmistakable shaggy charm.
