A Corgi is a small, sturdy dog breed known for its short legs, long body, and expressive, fox-like face. There are two main types: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Pembrokes are slightly smaller, often have a docked tail, and are the breed most associated with the British royal family, especially Queen Elizabeth II. Cardigans are larger, have rounded ears, and a long tail.
Corgis were originally herding dogs from Wales, used to herd cattle, sheep, and other livestock. Their low stature allowed them to nip at the heels of animals while avoiding kicks. They are intelligent, energetic, and highly trainable, making them good working dogs as well as companions.
Personality-wise, Corgis are friendly, affectionate, and bold, sometimes showing a surprisingly strong herding instinct even in domestic settings. They are also vocal and alert, which can make them excellent watchdogs. Despite their small size, they are active and need regular exercise to stay healthy and happy.
Their coat is double-layered, shedding seasonally, and comes in a variety of colors including red, sable, fawn, black and tan, and merle (mostly in Cardigans). Because of their short legs and long back, they can be prone to spinal issues, so careful handling and exercise are important.
Corgis have gained fame as both royal companions and internet stars, loved for their playful demeanor, waddling gait, and large, expressive ears.
