An Abyssal Necromancer in Dungeons & Dragons is a spellcaster who fuses the disciplined study of necromancy with the corrupting influence of the Abyss, the chaotic evil plane of demons. Unlike a conventional wizard who animates the dead through arcane formulae alone, an Abyssal Necromancer draws power from demonic pacts, profane rites, or direct exposure to abyssal energies. The result is a practitioner whose magic is volatile, aggressive, and often tainted by madness.
Mechanically, such a character is most commonly represented as a Wizard of the School of Necromancy, a Warlock bound to a fiendish patron, or a multiclass combination that blends arcane scholarship with infernal or abyssal invocation. Their spell repertoire typically includes Animate Dead, Danse Macabre, Blight, Summon Undead, and planar binding magic used to compel lesser demons. However, their undead are rarely silent servants; they may be twisted with demonic traits—burning eyes, chitinous growths, or frenzied aggression—reflecting the chaotic essence of the Abyss.
Lore-wise, Abyssal Necromancers often arise from cults devoted to demon lords such as Orcus, the Prince of Undeath. These individuals view death not as a solemn boundary but as raw material for apocalyptic transformation. Many seek to merge undeath with demonic corruption, creating hybrid abominations that blur the line between corpse and fiend. Their laboratories are typically profane sanctums layered with abyssal sigils, sacrificial altars, and portals that thin the veil between planes.
In a campaign, an Abyssal Necromancer functions effectively as a primary antagonist. Their motivations may include unleashing a demonic incursion, achieving lichdom through abyssal sponsorship, or reshaping the mortal world into a reflection of the Abyss itself. As a player character, they present a morally complex path—balancing immense destructive power against the constant risk of demonic domination.
This model is 50mm tall at 32mm scale.
