An asteroid spider in Dungeons & Dragons is a rare and alien creature most commonly found in space-themed settings such as Spelljammer. These bizarre entities resemble enormous arachnids, but they are adapted to the void of space rather than terrestrial environments. Asteroid spiders dwell among the floating debris of the cosmos—most notably on and within asteroids—where they camouflage themselves to ambush prey or lurk unnoticed by passing ships. They are not natural beasts but often considered aberrations or cosmic horrors, with physiology and behavior that unsettle even experienced adventurers.

Despite their spider-like appearance, asteroid spiders are not merely oversized versions of mundane arachnids. Their bodies are often fused with mineral deposits, giving them stony or crystalline exoskeletons that help them blend in with asteroid surfaces. Their legs are long and spindly, allowing them to traverse jagged rocks and crevices with uncanny speed and silence. They have multiple glowing eyes adapted for the deep void, and their fangs or mandibles are capable of injecting venom or psychic energy depending on the variant. In some versions, these spiders are known to spin webs between clusters of asteroids, using the webs not just for trapping prey but as a form of early warning system for nearby movement.

Asteroid spiders often feed on spacefaring creatures or the crews of unfortunate ships that wander too close. Intelligent variants have been known to lay dormant within hollowed-out asteroids or shipwrecks, awakening only when prey is near. Some possess limited magical abilities, especially illusions or telepathy, which they use to disorient or lure victims. Their alien origins often suggest that they were spawned in the Far Realm or evolved in the outer reaches of Wildspace, placing them in the same unsettling category as mind flayers or beholders.

In campaigns set in space or involving interstellar travel, asteroid spiders serve as terrifying ambush predators and evocative symbols of the unknown dangers lurking beyond the stars.
