In Dungeons & Dragons, a Barbed Devil, also known as a Hamatula, is a formidable fiend native to the Nine Hells of Baator. It stands as a mid-ranking devil in the infernal hierarchy, feared for both its ferocity in battle and its zealous devotion to order and punishment. Covered in vicious barbs from head to toe, a Barbed Devil’s appearance is both terrifying and functional—those who dare strike it in melee combat often find themselves impaled on its spines. These protrusions are not merely for intimidation; they serve as weapons, defensive mechanisms, and tools of torture.

Barbed Devils are typically about eight feet tall, hulking and muscular, with glowing red eyes and jagged teeth. Their very presence radiates menace, and their infernal heritage makes them resistant to most forms of damage, including fire and non-magical weapons. Their natural magical abilities allow them to conjure fire and teleport short distances, enabling them to harass, isolate, or surprise enemies on the battlefield. While not as overtly powerful as the elite greater devils, they are cunning and relentless, especially when defending the rigid hierarchy of Hell.

What distinguishes a Barbed Devil from lesser fiends is its dual nature as both warrior and jailer. These devils are often tasked with guarding infernal prisoners, sacred relics, or forbidden secrets within Hell’s fortified bastions. Their obsession with rules and structure makes them ideal enforcers of infernal law. Unlike the chaotic brutality of demons, Barbed Devils relish structure and protocol, even as they indulge in cruelty. They rarely act alone and often serve under higher-ranking devils, executing orders without hesitation and punishing failure among their ranks with ruthless efficiency.

In combat, they are dangerous opponents—able to grapple foes with their barbed bodies, injure those who attack them, and remain unshaken by fear or pain. Their presence on the Material Plane usually signifies infernal meddling at a serious level, whether as summoned enforcers, guardians of dark pacts, or agents of devilish intrigue.
