A Bearded Devil, known as a Barbazu in Infernal, is a mid-ranking fiend native to the Nine Hells in Dungeons & Dragons. These devils serve as enforcers and front-line warriors in the infernal legions of the archdevils, particularly under the command of archdukes such as Bel or Dispater. In appearance, a Bearded Devil is a hulking humanoid with scaly skin, clawed hands, and a signature infernal beard composed of writhing, barbed tendrils. This beard isn’t merely decorative—it serves as a potent weapon, capable of infecting enemies with infernal wounds that resist natural healing.

Bearded Devils are disciplined, militant, and absolutely loyal to the infernal hierarchy. Unlike the chaotic rage of demons, devils operate with cold precision and rigid structure. Bearded Devils are notorious for their cruelty and relish the suffering of mortals, but their sadism is channeled through strict military order. They often command or serve within infernal legions, guarding infernal fortresses, staging hellish incursions into the Material Plane, or leading lesser devils such as imps or lemures into battle. Their preferred weapons are long, heavy glaives that inflict wounds which, like their beards, are difficult to heal.

In combat, a Bearded Devil is a relentless opponent. Its infernal nature grants it resistance to many forms of mundane and magical damage, including fire and nonmagical weapons. While not especially intelligent, it possesses cunning battlefield awareness and follows orders with ruthless efficiency. Their ability to cause lingering wounds, combined with their immunity to poison and charm, makes them dangerous to unprepared adventurers.

Bearded Devils often rise through infernal ranks by obeying superiors, slaughtering demons in the Blood War, and corrupting mortal souls. While not powerful enough to command legions alone, their loyalty and cruelty ensure they are frequently rewarded with greater assignments and responsibilities in Hell’s infernal bureaucracy.
