A Crawling Claw is a macabre undead creature created through dark necromantic rituals, consisting of nothing more than a severed humanoid hand animated by malevolent magic. Though small in stature, these unsettling horrors are often employed as spies, assassins, messengers, or guardians by evil wizards, liches, and cultists. A Crawling Claw retains an eerie semblance of life, moving with unsettling speed and purpose as it obeys the commands of its creator without hesitation or remorse.
At first glance, a Crawling Claw appears to be an ordinary severed hand, but closer inspection reveals its unnatural nature. The flesh may be withered and grey, blackened with decay, or unnaturally well-preserved by dark enchantments. Long, dirty fingernails or razor-sharp claws extend from each finger, while black veins pulse faintly with necrotic energy beneath the skin. Some bear ancient runes burned into the palm, jewellery from their former owner, or fragments of armour still attached to the wrist. Whether skeletal or fleshed, every finger moves with disturbing precision, allowing the creature to scuttle across walls, ceilings, and floors with spider-like agility.
Despite its size, a Crawling Claw is a dangerous ambush predator. It hides in shadows, beneath furniture, inside chests, or clinging silently above doorways before suddenly springing onto its victim. Once attached, it claws at exposed flesh, attempts to throttle its target, or covers the mouth and eyes to create panic while larger allies attack. Its small size and exceptional agility make it surprisingly difficult to strike, allowing it to slip through cracks, climb vertical surfaces, and evade larger opponents with ease.
Many necromancers use Crawling Claws as tireless servants capable of performing simple tasks, retrieving objects, unlocking doors, or delivering written messages. More powerful versions may retain fragments of memories from the hand's former owner, granting them limited intelligence or allowing them to perform skilled actions such as writing, lockpicking, or wielding tiny weapons.
In a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, the Crawling Claw is an iconic undead horror that proves terror does not depend on size. Whether encountered alone as a sinister scout or in swarms serving a powerful necromancer, these animated hands transform ordinary rooms into places of creeping dread, where danger may literally come crawling from the darkness.
