A Death Dog is a terrifying two-headed predator that roams desolate wastelands, haunted forests, and forgotten ruins in relentless search of prey. Unlike ordinary wolves, these supernatural beasts are touched by dark magic and carry a deadly supernatural disease that has earned them their ominous name. Feared by travellers and seasoned adventurers alike, a single Death Dog is dangerous enough, but packs of them can devastate entire caravans or isolated villages.
Standing nearly four feet at the shoulder, a Death Dog possesses a lean, muscular body covered in coarse black, grey, or dark brown fur streaked with patches of scarred flesh. Its most distinctive feature is the pair of snarling canine heads mounted upon a single powerful neck. Each head possesses glowing yellow or crimson eyes that constantly scan their surroundings independently, making it nearly impossible to surprise the creature. Long rows of jagged teeth drip with diseased saliva, while its low growls seem to emerge from both mouths in eerie, unsettling harmony.
The creature's two heads grant it remarkable awareness in battle. While one head focuses on attacking, the other watches for threats, allowing the beast to react swiftly to flanking manoeuvres or hidden enemies. Death Dogs hunt with exceptional coordination, surrounding their prey before launching savage, relentless attacks from multiple directions. Their powerful jaws can tear through armour and flesh with terrifying efficiency.
The greatest danger posed by a Death Dog is the deadly disease carried within its bite. Victims who survive an attack may find themselves afflicted by a supernatural wasting sickness that gradually weakens the body, drains vitality, and can ultimately prove fatal without magical healing. Entire communities have fallen victim after a single infected survivor unknowingly carried the curse home.
Death Dogs possess only animal intelligence but are highly effective pack hunters. They communicate through growls, barks, and subtle body language, coordinating ambushes with frightening precision. They rarely retreat once blood has been spilled, pursuing wounded prey over great distances until exhaustion or disease claims the victim.
In a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, the Death Dog is an unforgettable wilderness threat, combining relentless pack tactics with the lingering danger of supernatural disease. Whether encountered prowling abandoned battlefields, stalking lonely forest roads, or serving darker masters as hunting beasts, these horrific predators remind adventurers that surviving the initial attack is only the beginning of the true danger.
