In Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), Duergar are a subrace of dwarves with a dark and intriguing background. Originating from the Underdark, these dwarves are often depicted as sinister and malevolent beings.

Physically, Duergar resemble their surface-dwelling kin but with some notable differences. They tend to be paler, with gray or ashen skin, and their eyes possess a distinct red or fiery glow. Duergar are also slightly taller and more slender than typical dwarves.

One of the defining features of Duergar is their ability to magically enlarge themselves, growing to nearly twice their normal size for short periods. This ability, called "Enlarge," grants them increased strength and resilience in combat, making them formidable adversaries.

Duergar society is highly militaristic and structured, often led by powerful figures such as kings or queens. They are known for their mastery of smithing and crafting, producing weapons, armor, and other goods of exceptional quality. However, their craftsmanship often serves dark purposes, as Duergar are notorious for their involvement in slave trading and other nefarious activities.

In terms of temperament, Duergar are typically cold, calculating, and distrustful of outsiders. They view the surface world with suspicion and disdain, preferring the safety and secrecy of the Underdark. Despite their sinister reputation, Duergar can sometimes be encountered as reluctant allies or mercenaries, particularly when their interests align with those of other underworld denizens.

In D&D lore, Duergar are often featured as antagonists in campaigns set in the Underdark or other subterranean environments. Their mastery of dark magic, formidable combat abilities, and cunning nature make them challenging foes for adventuring parties to overcome. However, their complex society and potential for redemption also provide opportunities for intriguing storytelling and character development within the game world.
