In Dungeons & Dragons, a Flying Cat Lizard is not a canonical creature found in official rulebooks, but rather a whimsical or homebrew invention that occasionally appears in fan content or light-hearted campaigns. It’s typically envisioned as a small, strange, and possibly magical hybrid creature, combining the traits of a feline, a lizard, and a flying animal—often resembling a cat with scales and wings, or a lizard with fur and feline features. The result is usually a bizarre but oddly endearing beast, sometimes used as a familiar, minor magical creature, or comic relief.

Flying Cat Lizards are often described as being about the size of a housecat, with membranous wings like those of a bat or dragon. They can climb and leap with feline agility, cling to walls like a gecko, and glide or even fly short distances. Their coloring can vary widely, from natural hues to iridescent or brightly magical patterns, depending on the tone of the campaign. In worlds where magic is common, these creatures might be found in enchanted forests, floating islands, or the tower of an eccentric wizard. Their temperament is often mischievous or curious, sometimes echoing the aloof independence of a cat combined with the quick darting movement of a lizard.

As a familiar, a Flying Cat Lizard might grant its master darkvision, heightened senses, or a climbing speed. In combat, it’s usually weak—no more threatening than a regular cat or small dragonling—but it could have a breath weapon or minor magical ability if flavored that way. Some Dungeon Masters use them as exotic pets for NPCs, guardians of arcane places, or even as a species native to a whimsical or fey-themed plane. While not officially recognized in D&D lore, the Flying Cat Lizard reflects the flexibility and imagination at the heart of the game.
