The Horned Devil, also known as a cornugon, is a powerful and fearsome fiend native to the Nine Hells in Dungeons & Dragons. It is a high-ranking devil, often acting as enforcers, commanders, or elite soldiers in the infernal hierarchy under archdevils or other greater devils. Towering at over ten feet tall, horned devils are monstrous beings with thick, scaled hides, enormous bat-like wings, muscular builds, and a tail tipped with a deadly stinger. Their most distinctive feature is the large pair of horns curling from their heads, emphasizing their brutal and intimidating presence.

Horned devils are lawful evil in alignment, reflecting the strict and hierarchical order of Hell. They serve the infernal cause with unwavering obedience and thrive in structured environments where authority is absolute. Unlike chaotic demons, devils like the cornugon value discipline, contracts, and rank. Though they are intelligent and capable of speech in Infernal and other languages, they are primarily known for their savagery in combat and their loyalty to Hell’s order. Their cunning is complemented by a deep cruelty, and they often take pleasure in inflicting pain or enforcing punishments.

In combat, horned devils are devastating opponents. They wield large spiked weapons such as forks or glaives and strike with powerful blows. Their barbed tails deliver venomous stings that can continue to harm even after the initial attack. On top of their physical prowess, they have innate magical abilities, such as casting fire-based spells or summoning fireballs, making them a threat at both close and long range. They are also highly resistant to non-magical weapons and immune to fire, a trait common to devils.

Horned devils are often encountered in high-level adventures, especially those involving infernal politics, devilish contracts, or direct incursions into the Nine Hells. Their role as enforcers means they are rarely alone and are frequently accompanied by lesser devils, making any encounter with them a serious and often deadly challenge.
