Children in D&D function as non-combatant non-player characters (NPCs), typically controlled by the Dungeon Master (DM), and are used to enrich the world, provide emotional depth, or serve as plot devices. A male child in this context would be a young boy of any playable race—human, elf, halfling, dwarf, or others—ranging in age from toddler to pre-adolescence, depending on the race’s lifespan. Human children might be considered children from birth to around 12 years old, while an elf of 30 might still be seen as a child by their cultural standards.
